Now, I absolutely love trying new things when it comes to beauty or DIY (See my blackhead clearing mask fail) so when I saw a post about making your own lipstick from crayons, I couldn’t help myself, I had to try it!

Their super easy to make and are great for kids who love getting into mummys makeup! Not to mention, it’s safe as we are using non-toxic crayons!

Now, you’re going to need a few things:

  1.     Crayola Crayons - these are non toxic
  2.     Coconut oil – 1/2 tsp to start withCrayola lipstick
  3.     1/2 L of hot water
  4.     Small pot
  5.     Heat safe glass/jar
  6.     Little plastic containers – I got mine from the supermarket but you can use stackable pill containers

Now follow these 4 simple steps – Please be careful handling the hot objects!

Step 1:
Fill pot just under half way with hot water. Bring water to boil then lower to simmer. Place glass in the centre to warm up but make sure you keep an eye on it.

Step 2:
Choose your colour and remove the paper wrapping. If you run the crayon under warm water for a few seconds first the paper is much easier to remove. Once you have removed all the paper, chop into 1cm pieces.

Step 3:
Add coconut oil and crayon pieces into glass to melt, stirring with a skewer. Test colour on back of hand but be careful as it will be hot! Give it a rub to warm into skin. If you want a glossier finish, add more coconut oil. Keep testing on your hand until you are happy with the finish

Step 4:
Remove glass from pot and pour liquid mixture into plastic container. Once again, please be careful as the glass will be very hot! Put the lid on and pop into the fridge for 15-20 minutes to set. Once set, go have a play! If you are not happy with the finish or colour, you can melt it down again and add more coconut oil or add in another crayon

Extra tip:
If you add a small piece of white crayon to your bright coloured crayon lipstick mixture when it’s melting this will make it a little more pastel. If you add in a small piece of black crayon, this will make it darker.

Here’s my crayon lipstick swatches

(Left to Right) -Red Orange, Scarlet, Carnation Pink, Red Violet, Violet

I am personally not into different coloured lipsticks such as blues and greens so I stuck to using the pinks and purples and tried a few oranges too but you could have great fun playing with all the different colours from the box of crayons. They would be great for fancy dress as well rather then buying a brand new lipstick you might only wear the once.

Hope this was helpful!
