If there is one thing you can do for your skin to slow down those little signs of ageing - it's using sunscreen. Yep, we know, it's not very exciting but you should be using that sunscreen every single day if you're worried about the signs of ageing on your skin. And let's face it, many of us are.
UV exposure is responsible for up to 90% of the premature signs of ageing - like those little fine lines, uneven skin tone, large pores and the dark spots. Simply applying sunscreen daily to exposed areas plays a significant role in preventing those. It's been well documented over the years including in an Australian study that took 900 people and followed them over 4 years. The daily sunscreen users showed far fewer visible signs of ageing over the period than those that hadn't used sunscreen.
But, we know, using sunscreen every single day sounds extreme. What about on those winter days? Or when it's cloudy? Or when you're just going to work for the day? Well, UV levels can still be quite high even in winter and around 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud.
So, you might work indoors but you probably go out for lunch and drive to work with the sun glaring through the window. Unless you're living in a cave, you're going to be exposed to UV rays just going about your daily routine. And here in New Zealand and Australia we live with the harshest UV rays in the world.
Wearing sunscreen not only reduces the signs of premature ageing, but it also makes good health sense in Australia and New Zealand where we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In fact research published earlier this year in the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health advises the daily use of sunscreen for this very reason.
Every week a new anti-ageing treatment pops up somewhere online. You can have snails slither over your face or rub nightingale droppings into your skin. Who knew that was a thing?
Sunscreen may not be as exotic but it's been extensively and scientifically proven to work. If you're spending money on anti-ageing treatments, but don't bother with sunscreen, you might want to rethink your skin care regime.
So, before you head off for that snail slime facial, put on some sun protection.
